b&n 6 - The 90s - is out!
And ooooh, I LOVE it. This issue features some impressive pieces by fantastic writers (who also happen to be lovely people!), English and German, short and long, serious and not quite so serious. There’s childhood memories, music, hip hop facts, fanzines and penpals, technology, more music, drugs, the odd swear word, and a lovely poster to decorate your walls with.

Gigs and concerts, concerts and gigs: Hauschka and...
There were people with radio button thingies in the entrance hall. Women with very high high heels. Men in suits. And us: a scruffy looking pair of soon to be drunk soon to be doctors, wearing sturdy boots in preparation for the second part of our evening. The presidential suite of the Lowry hotel wasn’t quite as glamorous as one would have expected, but the big floor to ceiling windows...

… WE’RE GETTING THERE!
Thanks to some pretty awesome folks, I’ve managed to collect enough material for the next issue of b&n. Topic is “Tied to the 90s”. Estimated time of arrival: early to mid December. Hip hip!
#beatoff - Generation hashtag
I don’t quite understand what’s going on here, all I can remember is sticking this label on my notebook on Friday night and joining in on a game of silly puns based around the word “beatoff” and now this: “scenester” (quote Adrian Slatcher on his blog - love it!) Fat Roland has declared a new age of outstanding literary excellence (or so) coming straight from...
From zine to zine - The Shrieking Violet media...
For her “media special” issue, Natalie over at the Shrieking Violet asked me (along with “Things happen” and “Belle Vue”, two zines from Manchester) why I still bother with print (Yes, iand gentlemen, b&n IS and has always been a print zine.) and I happily wrote a little paragraph.
Check out the online version of the Shrieking Violet 11 or try your luck...

Call for submissions! :)
Dear friends of popular culture,
it’s that time of the year again: b&n is looking for submissions!
Topic for the next b&n (issue 6) is “The 90s”, anything goes - so far we’ve published written pieces, poetry, interviews, photos, crafting instructions, recipes, snippets from other publications… b&n isn’t too much about serious journalism, you can...

Gold Panda - Lucky Shiner
It’s been a while since I’ve had my last massive crush on electronic music - the comfort of and easy access to indie music is just too seductive in times of neverending project work and constant mild confusion (i.e. my life). And then came Gold Panda. Having been on my mind for months now, mainly due to one fantastic song I came across ages ago and the lovely name (GOSH!), I was...

Rooftops, dinosaur skeletons, train corridors and ferris wheels are only a few of the places the Manchester Scenewipe guys can be found filming bands from all over the country performing their favourite songs. Think Black Cab sessions, minus the taxis, plus a generous dose of mightaswell, yeahwhynot and letsdoit!, paired with the odd failure to observe health & safety laws (wild guess) and...
3030 magazine launch in Manchester!
I was just about to write “you can tell the quality of a city’s cultural scene from the number of fanzines” but since I have absolutely no proof for this claim whatsoever, here’s just a simple announcement:
3030 magazine, a new zine on Manchester’s not-quite-so-big zine landscape, is celebrating its first issue with a nice little launch party at Common Bar tomorrow....
RNCM Orchestras with Ólafur Arnalds
Just like everyone else, I went to see the RNCM Symphony and Concert Orchestras playing a series of pieces from Jonny Greenwood, Avner Dorman, Stravinsky and Icelandic wunderkind Olafur Arnalds at the Bridgewater Hall this week. The evening started with Radiohead songs being played in the foyer, followed by the eerie Jonny Greenwood composition “Popcorn Superhet Receiver” which...

Hungry Pigeon Festival 2010 - Boys with Guitars
I love indoor festivals! Love love love them! Especially when they’re located in the town I live in - no need to worry about travelling, accomodation (or even worse CAMPING, ugh!), food, and if all else fails, there’s always someone’s sofa nearby to crash at. After enjoying MAPS festival in 2008 and a few gigs at Hungry Pigeon last year, I was quite looking forward to wandering...

Thomas Truax live at Noho (Hungry Pigeon Festival 2010)
Ever since seeing Thomas Truax playing MAPS festival a few years ago, I’ve been a fan of his live shows, and I was looking forward to seeing him again at this year’s Hungry Pigeon in the Northern Quarter. He played a very short, but excellent show. With the stage set right in front of a large window, his strange looking...
Hungry Pigeon ahead!
The third festival within a month will take me back to Manchester’s Northern Quarter - it’s time for the Hungry Pigeon festival again! I remember spending a couple of nice hours in the sun at the Picadilly Gardens outdoor stage last year, sat on the grass, drinking cider… happy memories!
While I only know a few of the bands that are playing - there are just too many - ...
ATP festival 2010, curated by Pavement
Almost at the last minute, I was offered a ticket for the sold out ATP in May which was curated by Pavement. Indoor festival + beach + one of my favourite bands = Best. Decision. Ever. It was like spending a weekend at home with a water fun park, an oversized deck chair and amazing bands right next to your house. Happy times.
So much happened in those few days that it is impossible for me to...
YES, b&n IS a PRINT magazine!
In terms of printed versions of b&n magazine, there’s some news!
First of all: b&n #5 is finished, done, finit and fertig, and you can find it at cafes, bars, records shops and at gigs around Manchester. I took some down to the Pavement ATP with me last weekend (review will follow in the next couple of days, I had to recover first) and they were all gone within 10 minutes! Thanks to...

FUC51
Did I actually mention how much I liked the FUC51 blog? Just about as much as the whole Madchester thing annoys me. A lot.
I remember going to a lecture at Salford university a couple of years ago - presented by “honorary professor” (or something like that) Johnny Marr. All the time during his (relatively uninspired and boring) talk I was wondering: Is there anything else to the music...
